Food Review: Ditherers not allowed

25 March 2015 - 02:11 By SJ Blackie

Tucked away from the madding crowds in Kramerville lies a gem of a restaurant, aptly named Fabled Foods. Its French bistro-style chairs overlook the grass, a glossy black pond and well-crafted sculptures. It's a tranquil, serene place.A charming aspect of Fabled Foods is the no-nonsense notice on the front of the menu, politely asking customers to refrain from making any changes to the ingredients as it detracts from the sheer deliciousness of the well-conceived dishes. If you are a ditherer you may be in a bit of a pickle. The difficulty lies in choosing between the gnocchi with fresh spinach, dolce latté (a blue creamy cheese) in a cream sauce or a "croque monsieur" toastie filled with halloumi, olive tapenade and onion marmalade.I chose the baby spinach, beetroot, boccocini, avocado, bacon, raspberries and red onion with homemade raspberry vinaigrette. My friend tucked into gem lettuce, with smoked Franschhoek trout, lentils, crispy bacon and sour cream with walnut vinaigrette. Utter deliciousness.Check ListWhat to eat? The zingy, inventive salads that you won't find anywhere else. When to go? For breakfast or lunch on a Saturday.Who to take? A salad or pasta with a fresh, cold drink will cost you about R100.Where? 4 Desmond Street, Kramerville, 011-262-3486...
