'Rabid' jackal sends town into panic

An elusive jackal, spottted on the streets of Howick, in KwaZulu-Natal, has residents scrambling to have their dogs vaccinated against rabies. An attack on a local woman and on a dog a week ago sparked widespread fear.Ginette Mitchell, a provincial animal health technician, said it was suspected that the jackal was rabid because "jackals are timid animals so it's uncommon for them to come into town".
