Nando's spreads its wings and gets a makeover

Nando's is to revamp its South African outlets and expand its 300-plus local store portfolio. "We're opening about 20 new outlets a year and we have a major relocation and revamp programme that will add larger, more beautiful stores," said Nando's Southern Africa CEO, Geoff Whyte.Nedbank recently granted a R320-million borrowing facility to Nando's.Two-thirds of all its stores are franchised and the remainder are company owned.Nando's is one of South Africa's most famous exports, with a presence in more than 30 countries, including Fiji, Singapore and Bangladesh.In Africa, it has operations in Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia."We have done very well in the UK; we have more chains there than in South Africa," said Whyte. "And we're approaching 300 stores in Australia. In the US, we just expanded into Chicago."The company also supplies sauces to UK supermarkets Tesco and Sainsbury's.It displays only South African artwork in outlets around the world.Chicken remains the strongest fast-food category in South Africa.Euromonitor International notes that the value of the local fast-food chicken category is worth about R11.43-billion...
