The Times walked away with two awards in the 2015 Standard Bank Sikuvile Awards held in Sandton last night.

Reporter Shaun Smillie won the enterprise news category for a series titled The Lion of Alberton, on how a notorious drug dealer was finally brought to justice, while photographer Alon Skuy picked up the award for feature photography for a series of photos titled The Good Old Days on the plight of the elderly.

Almost 700 submissions were received, across 14 categories in the annual awards recognising excellence in South African journalism.

Chief Executive of the Print and Digital Media South Africa (PDMSA) Ingrid Louw, said there had been an increase in the number of entries this year.

“This is a clear indication of, firstly, the credibility of the Sikuvile Awards and, secondly, of the quality of our journalism and newspapers as well as the calibre of our journalists.”

The convenor judge, Paula Fray, agrees with Louw saying that the quality of the submissions this year impressed the judges. “I think it is safe to say that South African journalism is world class.”

The South African Story of the Year was won by the Daily Dispatch for the Nelson Mandela funeral Scandal by Bongani Fuzile and Mphumzi Zuzile.

The Newspaper Journalist Award went to Mia Malan from the Mail and Guardian and veteran photographer Peter Magubane was honoured with the Allan Kirkland SOGA Lifetime Achiever Award.
