Super metro decision delayed

A decision on whether Gauteng will get a fifth metropolitan municipality has been pushed back a month. Residents of four local municipalities - Randfontein, Mogale City, Merafong and Westonaria - will know by next month whether their areas will be granted metropolitan council status.The Municipal Demarcation Board announced last week that the matter of the proposed establishment of a West Rand metro had not been finalised because a request to that effect had been made late by Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Pravin Gordhan.Demarcation board chairman Jane Thupana said that Gordhan's request needed to go through the same procedures as all other demarcation proposals."The request for a West Rand category A municipality came late. The proposal has to be given the same chance. It still has to walk the same journey as all other proposals," she said.Meanwhile, the board has delayed making a decision on another curious request - the inclusion of Nkandla into a metropolitan council.Nkandla, a largely rural area, falls under Uthungulu District Municipality, which also encompasses Mthonjaneni, Mbonambi, uMlalazi, Ntambanana and uMhlathuze local municipalities.Richards Bay falls in the same district.The board said the matter concerning Nklandla would only be considered after next year's local government elections...
