Western Cape liquor authorities cracked the whip on Thursday – ordering Khayelitsha's tavern of death to shut its doors. The Osi's Place is where eight youths died during a stampede last week‚ an event that revived the debate about under-age drinking and related tragedies.Following a brief hearing on Thursday morning by the Western Cape Liquor Tribunal– an independent body that adjudicates liquor matters – Osi's licence was temporarily suspended‚ pending a full hearing.The eight were between the ages of 15 and 23 years.The hearing in Belville‚ Cape Town‚ was prompted by an urgent application brought by the The Western Cape Liquor Authority (WCLA) to the Tribunal‚ to have Osi’s licence suspended as a first step to have it revoked.WCLA spokesman‚ Philip Prinsloo‚ said they were happy about Thursday's outcome and would make their case for the permanent closure of the Khayelitsha-based tavern at a full hearing‚ which will begin on August 17.“We are going to present our case before the [tribunal] ... we have done our interim investigations also and we will continue to do it‚” he said‚ adding that the owner was awarded the licence in 2010.He said they would not tolerate irresponsible or unlawful trade at liquor outlets...
