Initiation outdated if boys keep dying

21 July 2015 - 02:04 By Tiyiselani Mathe, Vosloorus

Every year young South African men lose their lives in the name of culture, and we have failed dismally to fight this worrying issue. To avoid the unnecessary deaths of young men year in and year out initiation schools must be reviewed as must their relevance to our times.Culture is not static; it is dynamic and must be changed and adjusted if necessary. All cultures change and adapt to the times, and absorb elements of other cultures for their betterment.A culture that continues to kill its people has no place in any society and must be subject to change. The number of initiates who lose their lives is escalating and there must be urgent intervention before the situation escalates too far to be stopped. This does not mean that we must change our way of doing things entirely. It is a call to align our belief systems with the changing times. ..
