Fairytale on the make

23 July 2015 - 02:04 By Nivashni Nair

Once upon a time, a Durban matriculant posted a request on Facebook to find the belle of the ball. Durban North College pupil, Deon Govender, 19, took to social media yesterday asking for assistance in his fairytale quest. He's looking for a girl "who has never had the privilege or opportunity to attend a matric dance or never will have [such an] opportunity due to financial or other restraints" to be his partner at their school dance on Saturday."I realised that there are a lot of people out there who have not had the opportunity to have that special night or to feel really special," he said."I thought it would be a great idea to allow someone to feel that special feeling, too."Govender is not picky but has set the age limit at 21.Applications have been rolling in since Govender's post, which has been shared over 300 times, liked by at least 1000 Facebook users and received over 200 comments. His mother, Vino Govender, who is involved in charity work in the community with her son, has been vetting the applications. The lucky girl will be whisked away from her home and treated to a fairytale evening."We will pick her up and spoil her. She will be taken to a salon [to have] her hair, nails and make-up done and we will find a gown for her. This will be followed by a photoshoot and then we will head off to the matric dance at the Durban Country Club."His mother said: "Today my pride truly shines through for my son for taking the initiative to help another person that has not had the opportunities other kids have. It gives me immense joy to know that each one of us have goodness within us."..
