Will Dobbo earn stripes?

05 August 2015 - 02:04 By Craig Ray

New Western Province Currie Cup coach John Dobson described Friday's season opener against Griquas in Kimberley as the biggest game of his career. "Dobbo", as he is popularly known, has taken over from Allister Coetzee, who guided the team to the title in 2012 and last year.As defending champions with high expectations, Dobson will be under pressure from the outset, but he appears to be taking it all with a sense of humour."I grew up watching this team from the stands so to coach the blue and white stripes in the Currie Cup is a huge honour," Dobson said."I've been coach in a few under-19 and under-21 finals, Vodacom Cup finals and Varsity Cup finals, but this is the biggest game of my career, in round one of the Currie Cup, against Griquas."I spent most of my coaching career with junior teams, but to walk into a change room with the likes of Juan de Jongh, Jano Vermaak and Jean de Villiers [during the pre-season] is special."As defending champions it's not really the time to take over is it?" Dobson said with a grin. "We should have come seventh last year so I could be the great redeemer."I said to the president [Thelo Wakefield], 'I can only really mess it up because winning the title will only be par'."Dobson's first team sees an almost Super rugby strength backline with all but Damian de Allende in the mix from the Stormers campaign. Cheslin Kolbe, Dillyn Leyds, Seabelo Senatla, Juan de Jongh, Jaco Taute, Demetri Catrakilis and Nic Groom make up a formidable unit.Up front, hooker Bongi Mbonambi has been pencilled in at No2 but will face a fitness test just before kick-off to see if he has overcome a hamstring strain. As a precaution, hooker Charlie van Jaarsveld will fly up to Kimberley as cover."It's not a totally new team in terms of last season," Dobson said. "This team, mainly the pack, has not played together a lot since last year's Currie Cup final."That's the challenge for us, to ensure we get the pack working together as quickly as possible in order to bring our dangerous backline into play."Front rowers Mbonambi and prop Wilco Louw are the "new'' faces in the Province starting XV, despite both having played at Super rugby level for the Stormers already, with Marius Fourie (on loan from the SWD Eagles), Chris van Zyl, Chris Cloete, Jano Vermaak and Johnny Kotze the debutants on the bench...
