PSL title race: Who is going to win it?

07 August 2015 - 02:09 By Mazola Molefe and Tshepang Mailwane

None of the five coaches whose teams are considered Absa Premiership title contenders are brave enough to pick their sides as overwhelming favourites. All agree, though, that they can't be discounted when the 2015/16 season gets under way tomorrow.Kaizer Chiefs will attempt to defend the trophy with new man Steve Komphela at the helm, while Gordon Igesund admitted his experience as a four-times league winner thrusts him right in the deep end with Supersport United.Pitso Mosimane at Mamelodi Sundowns, Gavin Hunt at Bidvest Wits and Eric Tinkler at Orlando Pirates are all mentors looking to vindicate club bosses for the growing trend of sticking with homegrown coaches."If you look at my record and Gavin's there's a total of seven championships," Igesund said."This shows that local coaches have proven themselves. Recently, foreign coaches have come here and won nothing, with the exception of Stuart Baxter."Any of the five could bite the dust if there's nothing to show for the trust put in them, making this season's campaign one of the most intriguing in the PSL era."We can deliver," said Igesund. "I want us to be challengers, but I wish the others the best."Komphela said though there was no avoiding the rivalry, success at the expense of his peers could be bittersweet."The mandate at Chiefs, Pirates and Sundowns is simple. You have to win matches," the Amakhosi coach explained. "Obviously it's a pressure environment, but we are used to it. We have to be ready. Gavin and the others are settled."Igesund' s cross-town adversary Mosimane got off on the wrong foot with an early exit in the MTN8 during the week. The Sundowns coach said football gave no assurances."This game has no guarantees. We always play to win, but it doesn't always happen and we accept it," Mosimane said.Hunt was diplomatic, dissecting the strengths of his opposition but giving nothing away regarding the Clever Boys' chances, despite his pedigree as a three-times league winner."Supersport have a good strike force so they will be close."Sundowns are the favourites because they have not changed the side, but I can't see Kaizer Chiefs doing what they did last season, going unbeaten in the first half of the season," Hunt said.Tinkler will have to juggle the Caf Confederations Cup and the premiership campaign."The responsibility is massive and fans are hard to please. I have grown to understand that."It's about the coach being able to handle the pressure. The expectations are high and we need to achieve our objectives," he said.OPENING WEEKEND PSL FIXTURES:Tomorrow, August 8Free State Stars vs Black Aces at 3pm (SABC1)Polokwane City vs Bloemfontein Celtic at 3pm (SS4)Platinum Stars vs Mamelodi Sundowns at 8.15pm (SABC 1, SS4)Bidvest Wits vs Ajax Cape Town at 8.15pm (SABC 1)Sunday, August 9Golden Arrows vs University of Pretoria at 3pmChippa United vs Kaizer Chiefs at 3pm (SS4)..
