'Defeat can make SA netball team winners'

13 August 2015 - 02:04 By Michael Vlismas

As the Spar Proteas enjoy a day off at Sydney's Manly Beach today, they could be forgiven for bracing for a new storm in their Netball World Cup campaign. They will go from a 66-31 defeat against world No1 Australia yesterday and into another tough match against world No3 England tomorrow. But that is how coach Norma Plummer likes it. As Plummer has said all along in this Netball World Cup, the only way for the Proteas to progress from world No5 is to keep playing against the best."Australia were always going to take it up to us, but that's the whole idea. They've got to experience that. You learn more from your defeats than your victories," said Plummer. What the Australian and New Zealand players have in their favour is regular competition against each other in the world's best domestic netball competition - the ANZ Championship. And Plummer believes the Spar Proteas have the players capable of being counted among the world's best if they can experience that same level of competition.Australian goal shooter Caitlin Thwaites said: "The scoreline in our match might not have shown it but the South African girls' skills are really incredible, and getting better. I really liked the goal defence (Karla Mostert). I think she's amazing in the way that she comes through for the ball - really unexpectedly. And the goal shooter (Lenize Potgieter) also impressed me. I think if this South African team continues to build over the next couple of years, we could be in trouble."..
