The shortage of generators makes Gauteng’s primary health services susceptible to power failures‚ the Democratic Alliance’s Jack Bloom said on Thursday. He said health MEC Qedani Mahlangu had revealed in the in the provincial legislature that “248 public clinics in Gauteng do not have generators to cope with power failures”.Gauteng’s 34 public hospitals were covered‚ it appeared‚ as all “have generator backup‚ with 128 generators of which eight are not currently working”‚ as did all the province’s community health centres.Just 70 clinics have generators‚ “while 65 will receive generators in the current financial year‚ and 183 clinics in the next three years”‚ Bloom quoted Mahlangu as saying.“Very little can function in a clinic without electricity‚ and medicines can spoil in fridges‚” said Bloom.“The roll-out of generators to clinics needs to be speeded up as electricity failures are an ever-present hazard as Eskom struggles to provide a reliable electricity supply.”..
