Throwing buckets of water onto the floor to wash away human blood, staff at a King Pie store in Doornfontein, Johannesburg, casually cleaned up shortly before closing time last night.

A passerby in front of the store  had been shot and wounded by a man who went on a shooting rampage at about  6pm. In total, six people, including a police reservist, were injured, two critically.

The suspect is on the run, said police spokesman Captain Doniah Mothutsane.

The drama began a block  away in a public toilet that borders a busy taxi rank. The suspect opened fire in the toilet, hitting one person in the leg. The suspect had apparently not been given change after paying the R2 fee to use the toilet, according to  plainclothes policeman on the scene.

The gunman  ran out of the bathroom and was chased by a police reservist whom he shot in the ankle.

The suspect then opened fire in the area that surrounds the taxi rank, injuring  two more people.

Mothutsane said a further two people were injured in a stampede triggered by the shooting.

But two hours later, life continued as normal as hawkers sold their wares and cashiers at a  nearby fish shop served  customers.
