Millions of rand flow at Nederburg Auction

Rare premium wines fetched just over R6-million at the Nederburg Auction in Paarl, with the key rand-per-litre indicator falling 2.2% compared with last year's sale. Auction manager Dalene Steyn said this was a "fantastic" result in a difficult economic climate. "The SA wine industry again did something really good here today," she said.Record rand-per-litre prices were set in the fortified, cap classique, port and dry white wine categories.Steyn said Tsogo Sun was the leading buyer, spending more than R600000, while Spar in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape spent a combined R750000.The auction, on Friday and Saturday, also saw a 5% increase in international sales.The 129 wines in the sale represented 67 producers and included 60 reds, 35 whites, 12 dessert wines, six fortifieds, nine ports and seven cap classiques.A 275ml bottle of 1800 Jaubert Family Muscat, from family-owned private cellar Joubert-Tradauw, fetched R42500.Spar Eastern Cape's senior retail operations manager at Tops, Deon Schnetler, said the sharp price rise in the past four years showed that the true worth of the country's finest wines was starting to show...
