Two people were killed last night and 34 seriously injured when an Intercape bus was petrol-bombed in Strand, outside Cape Town.

The City of Cape Town said the attack was mounted in Onverwacht Road. Earlier reports said a about 50  passengers on the bus were  injured.

Intercape is the largest intercity passenger transport service in the country.

‘‘At this stage the reason behind this callous act is still unknown,’’ said the acting executive mayor, Brett Herron.

‘‘We grieve with the families of the deceased during this time of loss.’’

Herron thanked  the emergency services and the police for their swift action and appealed to them ‘‘to work tirelessly until those responsible are arrested and prosecuted’’.
