Korkie backs aid for Yemen

South African aid worker Yolande Korkie, held hostage in Yemen for nine months, has backed local efforts to provide aid to the war-torn country. Korkie was released from captivity in January 2014 after negotiations by South African aid organisation Gift of the Givers. Her husband, Pierre, who was also held hostage, was killed in a rescue effort that December.Yesterday, Gift of the Givers founder Imtiaz Sooliman said Yemen's Port of Aden had been opened to shipping after being closed for six months ... With this development, the organisation, based in Pietermaritzburg, was collecting aid for the country, where 24million people have been affected by war, poverty and drought.Korkie, who spent four years in Yemen before her capture, has supported the aid drive."Pierre and I went to Yemen to help. In my four years I saw real poverty," she said, adding that the opening of the port was a chance for South Africans to get involved in relief efforts.Sooliman said at least 20 shipping containers had been packed with supplies...
