The chief traffic officer in Maquassi-Hills municipality has been re-arrested for alleged fraud, after being released on bail by the Wolmaransstad Magistrate's Court in a separate fraud and corruption case, the Hawks said on Thursday.
Spokesperson Lieutenant Robert Netshiuda in a statement said soon after being released on R5,000 bail on Wednesday, Windy Mahlangu, 46, was re-arrested in the separate fraud case.
Mahlangu was originally arrested on Friday for allegedly defrauding the North West municipality of R540,000 through unpaid licence discs and traffic fines.
It is alleged Mahlangu worked with truck owner Kobus Jordaan, 49, to defraud the municipality.
He allegedly issued fraudulent licence discs for Jordaan’s 39 trucks and ensured Jordaan did not pay traffic fines for all the trucks.
Jordaan was also arrested last week, but was released on R500 bail because of his "ill health", Netshiunda said at the time.
"The Balfour police executed the warrant of arrest they had against Mahlangu few moments after he stepped out of the court building," Netshiuda said.
"He is currently behind bars and will be appearing in the Balfour Magistrate’s Court, Mpumalanga, on Friday."
Regarding Mahlangu's case in the North West, he was expected back in court on September 30 so his and Jordaan's cases could be linked.
This was separate from the case, which was postponed to November 16 in the same court for further investigations.
"Mahlangu will also be in the dock on 14 January 2016 for another fraud case in Siyabuswa, also in Mpumalanga," Netshiunda said.
