Strange Mates: Kanye gets an unlikely new muse

Kanye West has had a rough ride on his journey to become a fashion designer, with one failed line, KW by Kanye West, labelled "rap with a capital C" and a second, Yeezy, receiving mostly unfavourably reviews. But one thing he always delivers is a curveball. His latest? A friendship with Katharine Hamnett, the British designer famous for her bold-lettered protest tees and eco-activism.Hamnett, 68, was West's unlikely muse for his second Yeezy collection, shown at New York Fashion Week recently. The designer is said to have opened her archive of army fatigues and sweatshirts to the rapper, who in turn showed a collection composed mainly of leggings, oversized sweatshirts and tatty-looking coats in earthy hues.Hamnett was at the show, sitting on the front row, but went pretty much unnoticed thanks to her mates: West's wife Kim Kardashian, Lorde and Drake, to name a few.Although it seems an unlikely friendship, West and Hamnett share a strong anti-establishment attitude. Where Hamnett's protests have been channelled, quite politely, through her clothing - most memorably the ''58% don't want pershing" (a reference to polls showing public opposition in the UK against the basing of Pershing missiles in the country) T-shirt she wore to meet Margaret Thatcher in 1984 - West's have been rather more poorly executed, spurting out mid-show, interview or award ceremony. Perhaps she can show him how it's done...
