A KwaZulu-Natal police officer appeared in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for allegedly promising to make a case "disappear".

Major Thulani Zwane said the constable, who was arrested on Thursday, was granted bail and the case postponed to October 26.

He said the 39-year-old allegedly took money from a person facing intimidation charges.

“It is alleged the constable promised to make the case against the accused disappear,” Zwane said.

The officer was arrested in the Ladysmith central business district following an intensive investigation by the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit.

KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner lieutenant-general Mmamonnye Ngobeni said: “We appeal to the community to report any corruption to the police so corrupt officers will be charged accordingly.

“This will send a clear message to other members that no one is above the law.”
