The Gift of the Givers “has the experience and capacity needed to provide aid to war torn areas and is therefore best placed to go where many have feared to tread”. On Monday‚ the non-governmental organisation tread into the Umlazi’s Glebelands Hostel‚ where violence has claimed the lives 44 since March last year. Most recently‚ KwaZulu-Natal’s community safety MEC Willies Mchunu last week called for “extraordinary interventions” to end the ongoing violence following the murder of two more people over the previous weekend. Gift of the Givers will be supplying packages of basic foodstuffs and cleaning materials – enough sustenance for about a month - to around 450 individuals and families from the seven worst-affected blocks at the hostel.According to the NGO‚ Glebelands is home to an estimated 22000 people living in about 80 blocks – “some are without water and electricity‚ extremely dilapidated and overcrowded‚ while others are newly constructed family units”.“It is believed that around 65% of the community is currently unemployed. The unemployment rate within the sector of the community most affected by the violence however‚ is believed to be as high as 95%.”Gift of the Givers is aware that it will be dangerous work as “due to the operation of hit squads‚ large areas within and immediately adjacent to the hostel have become ‘no-go zones’ for members of the community”.“In addition‚ the involvement of taxi hit men in the violence has rendered it too dangerous for many to use public transport. This prevents those employed from getting to work resulting in job losses.”..
