Start your week feeling green

Eat more greens, be more green. This is a core component of Green Monday which will be launched tonight in Cape Town. Tozie Zokufa, Africa programme manager of Humane Society International, said although the campaign was similar to the meat-free movement, which suggests people should avoid eating meat once a week, this initiative was designed to have wider appeal."We don't want to alienate a lot of people. We are saying have a day when we focus on healthy, sustainable consumption. Plant-based eating is at the heart of Green Mondays. So is animal welfare and reducing food," Zokufa said. The campaign is set to delight South Africa's "greenies" as it is geared at improving sustainable living. Participants are also encouraged to exercise more and use public transport or car-pool to reduce their carbon footprint.Zokufa, who is also chairman of Pan African Animal Welfare Alliance, said Green Mondays would benefit animals too."Animals are often raised on crowded farms that pollute the environment, in addition to causing tremendous animal suffering."Studies show that individuals who eat balanced plant-based diets, on average, have lower body weight, decreased risk of diabetes, heart disease and some cancers."When South Africans sign on to Green Mondays, they make a statement about the world they want to live in and leave for their children - a healthier, cleaner and more humane world."The initiative will be launched with a video narrated by actress Natalie Becker.
