About 40 commuters were injured on Monday morning when two buses collided on the N2 near the Jan Smuts Bridge near Athlone, paramedics said.

Peak hour traffic was disrupted leading to major delays as two lanes of the highway were closed.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said in a statement that paramedics arrived on scene and found some of the passengers from both buses walking around.

"On assessment, paramedics found that roughly 40 patients had sustained minor to moderate injuries in the collision," he said.

No one was seriously injured.

"Paramedics treated the patients and thereafter transported them to various hospitals in the area for further treatment.

"The cause of the rear-end collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations," Meiring said.
