A fire around the Magaliesburg mountains has damaged at least four homes and left scores of wildlife trapped in the inferno.

Resident Sonia van Kraayenburg said the blaze had started on Sunday afternoon around the Hornsneck area.

"The community is busy fighting it on the Kameeldrift side now. It is a nasty fire. " she told News24 at around 22:30.

"There is a lot of wild life in the area and it is terrible hearing the jackals crying. It seems like they are trapped," van Kraayenburg said.

It was unclear what had sparked the fire but the strong winds on the steep and dry area was making it difficult to contain.

While it was also unclear how many people had been affected following the destruction of the the four homes, van Kraayenburg said one man had lost seven cars in the flames. The vehicles had all been parked in the garage of his home which went up in smoke.

"They are all gone," she said.
