Bar Code: Fun and games for the whole family

Sports bars pop up in the most unsporting places, like shopping malls and parking lots. So it came as a pleasant surprise to discover that the Bay Sports Bar is on the edge of a rugby field. It is possible, therefore, to enjoy a jar or two and watch real live muddied oafs here, not just on the flat-screen TVs.The Bay was once the clubhouse of False Bay Rugby Football Club, which has been at the Constantia Sports Complex since the late 1960s.Following a bit of a "publiftment", it recently reopened as a spacious family-friendly sports bar and restaurant with an eye on becoming the valley's next after-work local.Despite the woody newness of the makeover, it has retained its old sports pavilion atmosphere - faded photographs of league winners, honours boards, club notices, what have you - so much so that it feels forever Saturday afternoon in here. And that's not a bad thing.More good news: the Bay's specials are attractive. Monday's happy hour (discounted selected brands) runs from 4pm to 6pm; there's a two-meals-for-the-price-of-one special on Tuesdays; and on Wednesdays kids under 12 eat for free. They do quiz nights and karaoke on alternate Thursdays (you need to phone), live music on Fridays, and of course, Saturdays are for shouting at the television. Lastly, they do a buffet lunch on the first Sunday of the month. There's a kiddies' play area. You can watch them work up an appetite here from the beer garden. Responsible parenting? We do that stuff, big time.Constantia Sports Complex, Main Road, 021-794-0652, Monday 11am-9pm, Tuesday to Friday 11am-close, Saturday 10am-close, Sunday 10am-6pm..
