FiftyFifty: That 50s show, at a theatre near you

06 November 2015 - 02:28 By Shelley Seid

Darlings of South African theatre Ian and Vivienne Von Memerty are currently touring the country with their show Fantastic 50. They are celebrating a golden theatrical moment, as well as their half-century birthdays.Ian, known for the iconic show A Handful of Keys, as presenter of Strictly Come Dancing and as a judge on SA's Got Talent, talks about the highs and lows of the big Five Oh.50 is the new ...?Officially it is the new 35 - in reality it's the new list of things you have to write down so you don't forget them. The best thing about being 50?Technology - e-mail, Google, Whatsapp. The worst part of hitting 50?Technology - email, Google, Whatsapp. What do you have now that you didn't have 25 years ago?Perspective, wrinkles and an ongoing battle with my waistline - at best it can be called a truce! (And since I started drinking only at 40, I also have wine and olives). What can't you do now that you could do 10 years ago?Cocktail parties. If I go to hell, my hell will be continuous cocktail parties, in working lights, during a sound check with a drummer! And neither of us can do "dull". It defeats us.What no longer works?Tolerance for "drama". Adrenaline is for life-and-death issues, not "show business". In the show I give a long list of illnesses I have had so I feel I can pretty much deal with whatever comes up physically. What works better? Our marriage. Our performances. Our WiFi.Anything you are planning to change half a century later?I intend to take Sundays off. And I would love to take my schedule and beat it into submission, until I feel in control of it rather than the other way round. And my current Messiah complex, during this drought, is to try and wake 'the countryside up to the transformative power of "holistic grazing". It's counter-intuitive but cows, sheep, goats and camels, when managed properly, can rehabilitate desertified land. Google Allan Savory.Anything you need to give up? Cut down on?Food, and food, and of course, food.Do you catch yourself saying things that show your age?Oh please! I have two children (20 and 15). Half the time I stare at them in wonder that they have managed to learn an alternative language and culture right under my nose. What should a 50-year-old with dignity not do?Well it depends on how important dignity is to you. Inner integrity means that you should do what makes you feel right. When I heard the phrase "other people's opinion of me is not my concern", it rang through me like a gong. What steps are you planning to take to stay young/look young?Holidays, posture, water, diet, exercise and laughing - at myself, at us, at everyone.Fantastic 50 can be seen at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre, UKZN, from Wednesday until November 22. Book at Computicket...
