A police officer from Empangeni was shot and killed on Saturday morning as he tried to stop robbers from making off with a woman's stokvel money, said KwaZulu-Natal police.

The warrant officer in his 30s and his colleague were doing patrols around the CBD when they noticed a woman being robbed, said Brigadier Jay Naicker.

The woman had just left the bank with a substantial amount of money.

"One of the police officers grabbed hold of a suspect. The suspect was armed and he shot him in the chest," said Naicker.

The wounded officer also managed to fire a shot at the suspect and he wounded him in the leg.

The officer, however, died of his injuries at the scene while the injured suspect was arrested.

His firearm was recovered.

Naicker said the suspect's accomplice managed to flee the scene with the money.

"He is still on the run," said Naicker.
