Police have arrested three students in connection with two buildings that were set on fire at the University of Western Cape (UWC) this morning.

The university remains closed today due to continuing protests by a small group of students.

University spokesman Luthando Tyhalibongo said the fire had been started at about 7am. One of the buildings damaged was the residence administration building. The cost of the damage is not yet known.

Before the weekend, Tyhalibongo confirmed damages from the protests were estimated to cost about R10-million.

"Damages include the university and student buildings, damage to university and private cars and also attacks on students who did not want to protest," he said.

Some UWC students were due to write exams today at a secret location off campus.

Meanwhile 27 students from the Cape Pensinsula University of Technology are appearing at the Bellville magistrates court this morning in connection with violent protests that took place on the Bellville campus last week.
