A 20-year-old woman arrested for trying to sell her baby on Gumtree for R5 000 is expected to enter a plea in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court next week.

She appeared briefly on Monday, where the matter to be remanded, as she had retained a new attorney.

She had already abandoned her bid for bail during her first appearance last month.

She was arrested in Pietermaritzburg after an undercover agent arranged to buy the 19-month-old baby from her.

The toddler was apparently present when the mother subsequently met with a policewoman and allegedly negotiated the sale of her child.

The woman allegedly said her reason for selling the toddler was because the father was not providing financial support and had questioned the boy’s paternity.

The child was handed to a social worker and the R5 000 was recovered.
