Red-hot buys for a cool Christmas - despite the drought

Portable swimming pools and fans are top-sellers this festive season, fuelled by the worst drought in three decades. "The national heatwave has taken sales of these products to triple-digit growth in percentage terms," said Gary Hadfield, CEO of online retailer Loot.co.za.He said the water restrictions in Gauteng had prompted people to buy smaller splash pools instead of filling up their big garden pools.Fans are selling like "hot cakes", said retailer Game."We brought in stock of 100 fans for Black Friday and there was only one demo fan left. On ordinary days we sell probably 10 to 15 fans a day."Cellphones are also flying off the shelves. Lots of people lose their phone over Christmas," said Game.Despite a difficult year, people are still opening up their wallets.Game made over R1-million in revenue on Black Friday, the November 27 cut-price shopping extravaganza.
