A 21-year-old man arrested in January 2012 for the murder of former Bafana Bafana defender Jeffrey Ntuka is suing the state for wrongful arrest.

The former Kaizer Chiefs defender was stabbed to death outside a tavern and according to Pretoria News, JM Makhetha was arrested by police for the murder.

Makhetha was detained for hours and released the next morning with his eyes swollen and covered in bruises. This after one of the officers at the station noticed that they had arrested the wrong person.

According to the report, acting Judge Japie Strydom on Monday ordered police to pay Makhetha the damages he could prove he had suffered. Makhetha is claiming R250,000 according to the report.

Judge Strydom ruled that the police refused to help Makhetha open a case and only did so after a lawyer intervened, according to the report.

In 2013, April Jao was convicted of the crime and sentenced to 12 years in jail.
