Bar Code: You can dive in, but don't dive out

06 January 2016 - 02:39 By Andrew Donaldson

We dive into The Foreign Exchange or, more familiarly, Forex, in the middle of a late-afternoon heatwave - inasmuch as one can dive into an establishment that's at the top of a steepish flight of stairs. It must be a pretty risky business getting back to the street at the end of an evening. The sign outside this comfortably scruffy bar declares it is home to "those who work hard, play hard and dare to explore the world". Given the rand's troubles, which have put the kibosh on travel for the forseeable, it would appear that partying is all that is left to such people. We have seen the pictures on social media, and "hard" is perhaps too soft a description for the kamikaze bacchanals passing for normal behaviour here. An activity called "beer pong" is an example. This involves teams tossing table-tennis balls into glasses of beer which are then scarfed down to raucous cheers. It makes for "very intense" Thursday evenings, we're told. But no beer pong this afternoon. In fact, it's rather quiet. But that's okay. The airy emptiness is welcome. We relax in a coolish breeze, gazing across the rooftops.Forex claims it is the only bar in Obs with a view, and if you can call a glimpse of Salt River a view, then so be it.The choice of wine is limited, but two of the four options are easy-on-the-pocket, extremely quaffable Wolftraps. All the usual shooters are here. One of the many craft beers served is an Indian pale ale called Californicator. Carefully making our way down the stairs, we wonder if it's any good for pong. The Foreign Exchange, 92-96 Station Road, Observatory, 021-448-0083. Monday to Wednesday, 4pm to midnight; Thursday to Saturday, 4pm to 2am; Sunday closed..
