DA's dream is to run Nkandla

11 January 2016 - 09:15 By MATTHEW SAVIDES

As the Democratic Alliance launched its second branch in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal, yesterday, its provincial leader Zwakele Mncwango urged voters to ensure that when President Jacob Zuma leaves office he "retires under a DA government". The launch, in the rural Nkandla municipality which Zuma calls home, comes five weeks after the DA launched its first branch there. The two branches, Mncwango said, would be a good stepping stone for the party in the area.Ahead of the 2011 local government elections, the party launched a ward in Nkandla but it failed to sustain early interest and folded.Mncwango said he had higher hopes this time because of the interest shown by locals since last month. Local government elections are scheduled for later this year."We are talking about 60 members joining us. We have about 120 members in the first branch. It's encouraging to see the interest and people joining the DA."This is a good start in an area where we don't have a single councillor. I am not saying that we are going to win the municipality [in the 2016 election], but the aim is to get at least one seat."Mncwango said Zuma had neglected the residents."I encouraged them [residents] to share this dream that when President Zuma retires, when he eventually steps down, that he must retire under a DA government so that he can see proper service delivery."..
