Insta art: A real photo opportunity

12 January 2016 - 10:15 By Sylvia McKeown

Gone are the days of the sovereign spenders commissioning big-name artists to paint the ceilings of ancient empires. Today Instagram has become the forum for checking out great art. Growing steadily from 300million to 400million users, 2015 became the year that solidified the photo-sharing social media platform as the go-to gallery of artistic commerce. This year will be the year it explodes. An example of this phenomenon is the embroidery artist Danielle Clough's (@Fiance_Knowles) feverishly coloured threadwork. Her tennis and badminton racquet embroidery series, What a Racket, has received a lot of international attention in the past week. She has landed over a thousand followers, 15 more tennis racquet commissions and a shout out from tennis legend Martina Navratilova on Twitter in the last few days."Instagram is one of the most powerful tools in the self-promotion kit," says Clough."For me it's more of a show room than a gallery - a personal space to display my work in a way that's both accessible and interesting.''Apps like Snap Chat allow us to share the present moment instantly."..
