Leonardo DiCaprio a sure-fire winner

12 January 2016 - 08:41 By Leonie Wagner

Forget the horses or the Lotto, if you're into betting, it should be Leonardo DiCaprio on whom you put your money. The 41-year-old won a Golden Globe award for best actor in a motion picture drama, The Revenant, at the weekend.Further strengthening DiCaprio's hopes of finally claiming a coveted Oscar is that in the past decade, nine out of 10 actors who won a Golden Globe also won the gold statuette. While the voting for this year's Oscar nominations has closed and nominees will be announced later this week, it can be argued the outcomes at the Globes have no bearing on the Oscars. But the Globes have a good track record in predicting Oscar winners. Last year, 12 Years a Slave, Matthew McConaughey, Cate Blanchett and Alfonso Cuaron all went on to pick up Oscars for best picture, lead actor, lead actress and best director respectively.DiCaprio has been nominated for an Oscar five times but has never won. This year's Globes ceremony lived up to its reputation as the naughtiest awards show. The evening's sharp-tongued host, Ricky Gervais, left many with emotional scars. Returning after a hiatus since 2012, Gervais didn't hold back, taking a jab at Caitlyn Jenner's transition, DiCaprio, Jane Fonda, Denzel Washington and Taraji P Henson. He also took a swipe at Ben Affleck when introducing Matt Damon, calling him "the only person who Ben Affleck hasn't been unfaithful to"...
