Council unfazed by half-full dams

Cape Town's dams are only half full, with the hottest weeks of summer still to come. The city council reported yesterday that the volume of water in the six main dams had fallen by 6% in the past week, partly due to evaporation, and was 40% less than at this time last year.But Ernest Sonnenberg, the mayoral committee member for utility services, is confident that the city will see out the summer without a water crisis."Through restrictions and careful demand management, and with a responsible customer base, the city should be able to manage the available resources," he said.It was too early to tell whether the water restrictions implemented on January 1 were working."Collective use of water in January will only be determined once all meters have been read in late February," he said.Western Cape Emergency Medical Services spokesman Robert Daniels said the services had responded to 64 heat-related incidents between December 15 and January 15.The mayoral committee member for health, Siyabulela Mamkeli, said the hot weather was linked to an increase in diarrhoea among under-fives...
