New on the food scene: From the Mother City with love

In the eternal war of good versus evil - otherwise known as Cape Town vs Johannesburg - Capetonians have always had a trump card. A flaming sword they could wave whenever the battle for bragging rights got too hot. Inexplicably, the Mother City is the gastronomic capital of South Africa. If you need proof, look no further than Luke Dale-Roberts, whose restaurant, Test Kitchen, was voted one of the world's best, one of only two South African restaurants to make the list.But the sands are shifting. The Saxon, in Sandhurst, has temporarily poached Dale-Roberts and, as of tomorrow, they'll have him sweating behind the pots for good, honest Joburgers."The idea came about when the general manager of the Saxon approached me and wanted me to do something a little different. We decided on a pop-up restaurant. It seemed like a good idea at the time and I hope we're not proved wrong," said Dale-Roberts.Creatively named "Luke Dale-Roberts at the Saxon", the pop-up will take culinary and aesthetic cues from the Test Kitchen. The restaurant's interior will resemble that of its Cape sibling and will feature pieces from ceramist John Bauer."The restaurant will be modelled on Test Kitchen with a few elements of Potluck [his other restaurant] thrown in. Like Test Kitchen, it will have a seven- course menu," said Dale-Roberts.Dale-Roberts' dalliance with the Johannesburg foodie set expires at the end of March, but fate is a fickle mistress and the chef is not fundamentally opposed to the idea of extending his stay."If this is a raging success then it might be something to look at, but right now we are focusing on what is in front of us," he said.The seven-course tasting menu costs R1330 (which includes two appetisers) or R2100 with a wine or tea pairing.Bookings are likely to disappear faster than your resolve to keep a New Year's resolution.The restaurant is open for dinner from Tuesday to Saturday.
