29 January 2016 - 02:35 By Rea Khoabane

The nominations for the British Critics' Choice awards have come and gone, the Grammy Awards take place next month and the SAMAs roll up in April. While some music industry faces will remain the same, 2016 looks set to bring in a whole new chorus of songsters.Following in the footsteps of Adele and Sam Smith, 24-year-old multi-instrumentalist Jack Garratt is already ahead in the international race to be the sound of 2016, but we look a little closer to home to find the names that will be lighting up your radio dials.IF YOU'RE A FAN OF T.I.Trap music is the term that's most used to describe eMtee's style. It is a genre that originated in the States in the '90s, characterised by aggressive lyrics, synthesisers, crisp but grimy beats, and heavy bass. eMtee follows in the footsteps of the king of trap music, T.I., real name Clifford Joseph Harris. His hit Roll Up got four Metro FM Music Awards nominations and won the SA Hip-Hop Award for song of the year last year.IF YOU'RE FAN OF NICKI MINAJGigi Lamayne is the girl to look out for locally. Known to hip-hop heads as a lyricist, she can also make fun, energetic music to get down to. Just listen to her song, Ice Cream remix, featuring Khuli Chana, for proof.IF YOU'RE A FAN OF DJ KHALEDLook out for DJ Speedsta, real name Lesego Nkaiseng, a Vaal-born DJ and producer.Like Khaled, this music-maker creates the hottest of beats and features a number of renowned singers and hip-hop artists on his tracks. He' also adept at ad libbing:''Yo Speedsta, you killin 'em, son" has been heard infiltrated into some of his songs.IF YOU'RE A FAN OF FUTUREOn his popular song, Saga, with AKA, Anatii shows that he's clearly one of the best voices in hip-hop today. The singing rapper, whose hooks are easy like Sunday morning and as catchy as a beach ball, will make you dance just like Future does.IF YOU'RE A FAN OF CHRISETTE MICHELLEShekinah Donell made it into the Idols season eight top 20 in 2012 and was eliminated only because of her youth. But the songstress didn't let that deter her. She now has one of 2016's catchiest tunes, Back to the Beach, featuring Kyle Deutch, which has been nominated as song of the year at the Metro Music Awards. Just like Chrisette Michele, the 21-year-old Donell has a beautiful, smooth RnB-soul sound that stays in your head.IF YOU'RE A FAN OF JENNIFER HUDSONMmatema's big voice got a standing ovation during Idols season 12 last year and she's since been compared to American RnB superstar Jennifer Hudson. Mmatema was second to Karabo, but locals think she will be a star. ..
