The Times' chief photographer Alon Skuy has come third in the race for 2015 Newspaper Photographer of the Year.

The award is part of the prestigious annual Pictures of the Year International competition (POYi), as run by the Donald W Reynold's Journalism Institute.

Skuy's award-winning portfolio wasn't the only thing to catch the judges' eyes - Skuy also placed second in the  Issue Reporting Picture Story category for his work on inner city evictions.

Residents in Dukathole in Jeppestown were evicted by the Red Ants, who tossed their furniture out into the street. In the midst of the chaos, the building caught fire.

"I was called from work to rush to my place. When I arrived, everybody had been evacuated and my stuff was burnt inside. It's bad. We had nothing to do with the eviction," said a Kwambongwa tenant.

The winning portfolios can be seen on POYi's website.
