A family of six was seriously injured when the roof of their home collapsed during torrential rainfall in rural KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday.

Among the injured was an 11-year-old child.

KZN EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie said that paramedics had responded to the rural hamlet of Emxhakeni in the early hours of the morning.

It is understood that the roof of the family home, fashioned from bricks and tiles, had collapsed under the strain of heavy rains overnight.

McKenzie said that the entire roof structure had collapsed on the family.

“This morning EMS paramedics had responded to the scene and found the family of six all in a serious condition.  They had sustained injuries in the structural collapse incident,” he said.

“The six, including a young child, were treated and stabilised at the scene before being transported by ambulance to an area hospital in Madadeni for further medical care,” he added.
