Scores of people living in an informal settlement built on Transnet's property on Wednesday destroyed government houses that were under construction in Sir Lowry's Pass Village.
The group had initially begun their protest action two weeks ago, demanding that they be allowed to occupy the newly built houses, said local councillor, Johan Middleton.
The group returned again on Wednesday.
"Last time they damaged about 20 houses. I think another 20 were destroyed today," said Middleton.
He explained that the group could not move into the houses as they had been built for another group of people currently living in flood-prone areas.
On Wednesday night, Metro Police officers and members of the SA Police Service had been deployed to the scene.
Middleton could not immediately confirm whether any arrests had been made.
