Part of Table Mountain was on fire on Sunday morning, with helicopters dropping water bombs to contain it.

Plumes of smoke rose into the clear blue sky as fire and rescue workers helped the SA National Parks officials put it out.

Early information from the City's emergency services spokesperson Theo Lane was that the high winds and rugged terrain of the world heritage site was making dousing efforts difficult.

Four fire engines and two water tankers were at the scene to protect the diverse collection of wild flowers.

The popular cable way was still running.
