Outcome of teachers’ jobs-for-cash probe expected by mid-March

Education Minister Angie Motshekga has received the final draft of the “jobs for cash” report from the Ministerial Task Team investigating the sale of teacher posts by trade unions‚ her office confirmed on Tuesday. At the centre of the scandal is the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu)‚ whose members allegedly sold jobs for as much as R30‚000 each. This was possible because school principals and district education officials are in many cases Sadtu members.Motshekga said the report from the team chaired by Professor John Volmink was received by her office on Friday‚ and she had sight of it for the first time on Monday (29 February).“The Minister will meet with the relevant stakeholders cited in the report; this includes Teacher Trade Unions and School Governing Body organisations to share the findings of the report. It is necessary to make the report available to the relevant stakeholders cited to avoid them seeing the findings for the first time in the media.
