Sundowns claim hard-fought 1-0 victory against Highlands Park

The well-paid stars of Mamelodi Sundowns were made to look ordinary on Sunday afternoon by lower division opponents in the Nedbank Cup last 32. But the defending champions still had enough gas in the tank to overcome stubborn National First Division outfit Highlands Park.It took a moment of brilliance from midfielder Keagan Dolly in the sixth minute of extra time for Sundowns to pierce the opposition's armour, claim a hard-fought 1-0 win and avert a disastrous upset. For months now Sundowns have been dominating top-flight opposition with attractive football which sometimes looks like they are in a training session. But the game against this second-tier club was entirely a different matter.Highlands, who have the best defence in the First Division - just 13 goals conceded - matched Sundowns in every position from beginning to end.Baroka FC rested their regular players to concentrate rather on their promotion campaign but their reserves were still able to pull off yet another cup upset by knocking Chippa United out with a shock 3-2 away win at Buffalo City stadium, Jacky Motshegwa, rejected by Orlando Pirates, scored twice in a five-goal thriller as Baroka became the first lower league side to take a PSL scalp this year.Five years ago Baroka caused one of the biggest upsets in domestic football by beating Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals. Now they are on the brink of joining the PSL big boys. On the evidence of their squad depth on Sunday they could fit in easily.Mark Gleeson..
