Chiefs' title hopes fade after 2-0 defeat to Stars, Komphela laments ‘terrible performance’

Kaizer Chiefs' receding hopes of a successful title defence received another major blow last night as Platinum Stars beat them 2-0 to leave the champions 13 points off the summit with games fast running out.Ndumiso Mabena scored both goals to leave Chiefs still on 39 points, far behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, with eight games each left in the league programme. The realisation that they will have to hand over their crown is a now all too evident."The result is bad. It was a terrible performance," coach Steve Komphela said.A clever counterattack provided the game's first goal as Mabena's shot took a wickeddeflection off Mulomowandau Mathoho and beat Itumeleng Khune in the 24th minute.The second, scored 11 minutes from the end, looked a little fortuitous as Bernard Parker was penalised for a handball by controversial referee Victor Gomes, although TV replays showed he was not guilty. Mabena converted the kick with some aplomb, cheekily chipping over Khune.At the Old Peter Mokoba Stadium in Polokwane, Bidvest Wits slogged out a 1-0 victory on a slippery surface against hard-working Polokwane City to close the gap on Sundowns to seven points, writes Marc Strydom.The goal was scored in the 57th minute by Phumlani Ntshangase...
