Gordhan: I was not given deadline

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has accused the Hawks and "those who instruct them" of having no regard for the economic and social welfare of millions. Gordhan denied last night that he had been given a new deadline to answer questions relating to the SARS rogue unit.He was responding to an article in the Sunday Independent yesterday."My attorneys have confirmed to me that no other letter had been received by their office by close of business on Friday, March 11; nor an e-mail."I can also confirm that I am unaware of any 'new' letter," he said.Gordhan said a letter sent to the head of the Hawks on March 7 indicated:The refusal of the police unit to state, for the record the precise legislative provision in terms of which they are asking questions;That the deadline imposed [to answer questions] was not achievable given the road show I was undertaking. Referring to the questions, Gordhan said:"Once legal issues have been clarified, I will respond.He said: "Once again the Hawks, and those who instruct them, have [shown] no regard for the economic and social welfare of millions."Gordhan, with business and labour leaders who accompanied him to London and the US, will hold a news briefing today, the Treasury said.The finance minister's trip last week took place against the backdrop of rising concerns South Africa could lose its investment-grade rating by mid-year, so raising borrowing costs for government and business...
