Students calling for the removal of Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) vice-chancellor Dr Azwitevhelwi Nevhutalu closed down the university's campus in Cape Town on Wednesday. The students walked out of lectures in support of members of the Cape Peninsula University Employees/ Union‚ who made a formal complaint against Nevhutalu to the university council last month.Representatives of the students told TMG Digital they also intended to shut down the universities' satellite campuses."The vice-chancellor must fall‚" one of them said. The shutdown appeared to be spontaneous and students milled about on the campus in District Six‚ apparently unsure of what to do.The union said in its complaint‚ addressed to council chairperson Mbulelo Bikwani‚ that Nevhutalu had placed CPUT at risk with poor leadership and called for a formal investigation into several allegations‚ including:- Non-compliance with the Employment Equity Act;- Wasteful expenditure of more than R1-million as a result of weak human resources practices;- Mismanagement of student protests last year; and- Refusal to negotiate with protesting students or workers demanding higher wages. The union complaint said: "This institution has never experienced the level of damage and harm which CPUT now faces." – TMG Digital..
