Thirty-two others were hospitalised after they allegedly ingested an unidentified drug at the party, the provincial social development department said on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said a 19-year-old man collapsed and died during a party in KwaMashu's K section on Saturday. On Sunday, a 29-year-old man was found dead in his room in KwaMashu's E section.
Zwane said the deaths were being investigated.
The department said it had sent a group of social workers to help the families.
“We want to understand what happened to ensure that we do everything in our power to avoid a repeat. We also want to assist the families in dealing with this tragedy,” Social Development MEC Weziwe Thusi said.
Provincial education department spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said they were not aware of the incident, which happened outside school hours.
He cautioned parents about allowing their children to attend social gatherings, especially those not organised by their school.
“Children gather to celebrate the term ending, school reopening and all sorts of other things. What worries us is that we are not told that most of the people at the gatherings are school children. Some of them consume alcohol and take drugs during the gathering.”
He said the department would wait for a report from police. Nothing had been reported to the department as schools were closed for the Easter holidays.
