Captain Cook's 'blitzkrieg on Australia'

The University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, has been accused of trying to rewrite colonial history after telling its students the British arrival should be referred to as an "invasion" and not a settlement. The guidelines were described by commentators as politically correct madness and a "whitewash" of history. But they were defended by historians and university staff. The university also said it was offensive to claim that Captain Cook "discovered" Australia. According to "indigenous terminology guidelines", students and staff should describe the British, who arrived in the late 18th century, as having "invaded, occupied and colonised", in acknowledgement that the land was stolen - often by force - from the Aboriginal people."Describing the arrival of the Europeans as a 'settlement' attempts to view Australian history from the shores of England rather than the shores of Australia," the guidelines say.The guidelines sparked outrage and were splashed across the front page of Sydney's Daily Telegraph, which said the university was rewriting history and seeking to "scrub out" Captain Cook's contribution to Australia.Alan Jones, a prominent right-wing radio host, attacked the guidelines, calling them politically correct "rubbish". ..
