Joburg pushes cars off the road

The City of Johannesburg is broadening its transport plans by introducing exclusive lanes for buses and minibus taxis in the city centre and even on the highways.This follows a call by Metrobus for bus-dedicated lanes to eliminate "fender benders".In a report tabled before the city's council, Metrobus said traffic congestion and the lack of dedicated bus lanes contributed to road accidents.The city's member of the mayoral committee for transport, Christine Walters, told reporters yesterday that dedicated lanes for public transport were part of a bigger plan to get more people using public transport, walking or cycling."There are a number of dedicated lanes in the CBD we have identified. With Metrobus and other public transport, we will have a look at where it is appropriate for them to use dedicated lanes."For now, we will not be looking at bringing other operators on to the system until we have completed [it]. We believe that on highways in the future we would like to dedicate one lane to public transport and car-pool sharing...
