Comair to spread its wings

Ailrine operator Comair, the local franchisee of British Airways and owner of kulula.com, jumped 9% on the JSE yesterday after advising shareholders it was negotiating an acquisition.Following the collapse of Skywise in December, kulula.com's only surviving competitors in the domestic budget airline market are Mango and FlySafair. The South African budget airline industry has witnessed the collapses of Nationwide, Interlink, 1time and Velvet Sky over the past few years.In December, Comair became Boeing's first African customer for its new 737 MAX 8s range of airliners. Comair ordered eight of the new planes to expand its service to St Helena, among other destinations. It also announced a code-share agreement with Qatar Airways, adding five new African destinations to its list.Comair's most recent annual report listed Bidvest, via BB Investment Company, as its largest shareholder with a 26.91% stake, followed by Allan Gray with 12.9% and Britair with 11.5%...
